The rook tarradiddle “The Devil and Tom Walker by chapiter Irvington is a story that symbolizes the devastation effects of greed and the consequences of it. This story not only symbolizes greed but it also symbolizes evil, selfishness, religious belief and hypocrisy.
In this story, the main character “Tom Walker” is a miser who worships money more than he does his miserly wife. A miser is a person who is reluctant to spend money, sometimes to the point of apostasy even basic comforts. Tom Walker was a grabby and selfish man who lived an immoral life of greed. Tom Walker’s shortcut through the flood out ultimately leads to his come across with the devil, which in turn leads to his ill-gotten riches. Irving said, “The swamp was thickly braggy with great gloomy pines and hemlocks, some of them ninety feet high; which make it dark at noonday, and a retreat for all the owls of the neighborhood. It was extensive of pits and quagmires, partly covered with weeds and mosses; where the green surface a lot betrayed the traveller into a gulf of black smothering bobble; where the trunks of pines and hemlocks lay half drowned, half rotting, looking standardised alligators sleeping in the mire. While Tom is resting at the Indian Fort, a great black man with red eyeball appears out of no where sitting on a mystify directly opposite of him. The octogenarian Indian Fort is where Tom Walker first encounters Old Scratch a last name for the Devil. The Indian Fort also represented an evil place. The Indian Fort was described as a lonely drab place. “It was asserted that savages held incantations here and made sacrifices to the evil spirit.” (Pg. 100) The description of Old Scratch represents nothing but the devil and the evil that lies with him.
