In the new global economy, peasantry has become a central issue for development in the Third orbit in terms of whether it promotes or hinders growth. Following Bernsteins (1990) suggestion above, socio-economic systems dissent when defining peasants and their contribution, positive or negative, to development. What is certain, billions of peasants live on man today, and, as in all social companyes, a give of them are exploited by, for instance, better-off peasants or externals, such as multinational corporations.




While a variety of renderings of the term small farms view been suggested by different socio-economic systems, this paper will use the definition suggested by Mosher (1970) who saw it as a group of peasants that reckon of their farming operations largely in terms of providing for family inevitably through their own production, therefore also called subsistence farmers; generalising enough to be applicable for whichever system.
This paper will give an account of the entity and its offshoots, unremarkably considered responsible for exploiting and hence, benefiting from peasants; namely, the capitalist system. This system, understood as a mode of generalized commodity production, based on an essential class relationship between capitalists and workers (Bernstein 1992), results in four factors behind the evolution of farmers.
